Steve Jobs' Legacy
Steve Jobs wasn’t just a “computer guy” or business man. He was a genius, an inventor, a true visionary among the greats like Henry Ford or Thomas Edison. His influence was felt from the smallest startups to the biggest tech companies and transcended the boundaries of operating systems and computer platforms. He was a creator, an artist who painted a vision of how technology...

Uh-dobe.
Hey Adobe, how’s about you go back to making great tools for people to JUST CREATE STUFF rather than trying to control the WHOLE path from conception to delivery? Leave the server software to server software companies (and kill ColdFusion already). Get over trying to get everyone to use Flash to deliver media that does not NEED to be in a proprietary container (which is all Flash does for...

OMG, Netflix, really? I’m trying to troubleshoot a problem we’re having playing on a PS3 and AppleTV: last question was “Did you find what you were looking for?” I answered “No” and the next screen said “Thank you for your feedback” (or some bullshit like that). That’s the online equivalent of “Sorry, kid. Tough luck. Don’t let the...

Buyer Beware (of stolen computers on eBay)
You knew buying stuff on eBay can be risky, right? Especially used computers. An officer showed up at my home and told my wife they tracked a stolen computer’s location to the IP address of our house. WHA??? Apparently, they can do this. At first they said it was a Mac laptop, and well, the only Mac laptops that I’ve ever had were purchased directly from Apple, so I knew that was...

How the crap can Gateway sell a fairly pimped Core i3 laptop like this for $499 when Apple’s CHEAPEST laptop is $999??? That’s TWICE as much, people. Yeah, the build quality of Apple’s stuff is the best I’ve ever seen and their displays are incredible, but how do they expect to compete with stuff like this:...

ASCII porn (nude) 2
A little better proportions, IMO: /* _| |_ */ /* / \ */ /* ( * )( * ) */ /* \ / */ /* | | */ /* / \ */ /* / \{}/ \ */ /* | || | */ /* \ || / */ (belly button had to be removed ‘cause it was off-center)

So, if this new (RUMORED) Apple iTV thingy runs a version of iOS, will app developers need to tweak their apps yet AGAIN for a 16:9 aspect ratio screen? I guess it wouldn’t be too bad if the 960x640 apps were scaled up to 1280x720 or 1920x1080 and it was pillared on the sides. It’s not SO bad looking at a 3:2 aspect ratio image on a 16:9 screen. Maybe this is why Apple decided on a 3:2...

Old Dogs
Back in 1984 when Microsoft didn’t know what a computer mouse WAS (DOS anyone?) Apple was inventing (or stealing from Xerox) ways to use a mouse to move virtual files around a virtual desktop (clicking, dragging and dropping). In 1995 Microsoft came out with a pretty solid clone of Mac OS and piled on features that Apple knew weren’t really necessary, but MS ‘knew’ people...

A love letter to @dishnetwork
I actually sent the paragraph below to Dish Network via their contact form. Let’s see if it helps any. Ugh. SO ANNOYING! Can you guys PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE lower the volume of the commercials you are inserting (not the commercials normally on the network, but the ones you are inserting OVER them)? The volume difference is like 2x - 3x louder than the normal network volume (both shows and...

Worst app purchase ever: Textfree. I paid for it when I got it and they’ve changed their paid ‘upgrades’ so many times that I think now I have to pay AGAIN to get rid of the ads. It’s not even a good app either. It’s slow, buggy, the interface is ugly, it wrongly displays notification badges (showing that I have new messages when I do not), and the app publisher sends...

Rant about iOS 4 Folders
I think the folder implementation in iOS 4 is an atrocity. Maybe it’s better than nothing, but a couple of ideas that would have been SOOO much better:  vertical scrolling (could snap to grid when the icons come to rest)  list view, also with vertical scrolling (would allow longer app names to display properly and would also work well with folders - open a folder and flick up or down to...

“Corporate IT is really the spawn of the devil here on Earth. A place no man, woman, or child wants or needs to be, they find ways to terrorize every moment of our working life. Their purpose, not to help, but to terrorize with byzantine rules and arcane judgments calls, corporate IT knows how to do the job in the worst possible way.” From “Venkman” on Ars Technica:...

Rant to follow…
(In reply to a comment post on Gizmodo about Microsoft’s new mobile boss) The only thing Microsoft is good as it killing competition through lock-ins and, well, BUYING the competing companies and either gutting them till the company/idea/product they ‘bought’ is nothing like it used to be or just buying it and burying it so THERE IS NO COMPETITION. They know NOTHING about...

Does anyone else see a repeating of history like the early days of Apple and the open PC market? Android is evolving rapidly and Google has the power to put the kibosh on Apple’s iEmpire. These Android tablets could offer more features, speed, etc. than the iPad for the same price or less. And if Adobe can let Flash developers create decently-performing quasi-native apps with their tools, it...

Consumer Confusion About Product Naming
I just posted this in response to a post on Gizmodo, but I think the statements stand on their own as well. As far as PCs go, Sony is a bit overpriced compared to their competition, but I don’t think that’s the real problem. Their biggest hurdle (along with almost every other PC manufacturer that isn’t Apple) is product confusion, which is probably due to idiotic model names and...

Why Windows?
I just got an email from a relative about another Windows virus scare. I haven’t verified if it’s real or not, but even if it isn’t, I can’t understand how Windows users can put up with the fear and constant onslaught of viruses, trojans and other malware. Seems like every day there’s a new threat, and people go running and forwarding emails about the threat and what...

Natural Magic Mouse Enhancement
A love letter to Apple’s feedback people: Hello Apple Folks, Disclaimer: This comment is about the Magic Mouse, not iMac, but there was no option for Magic Mouse, so I chose iMac since they now ship with a Magic Mouse. Close enough, right? I picked up a Magic Mouse this past Friday evening (10/30/09) and have been using it for the past three days. I absolutely love the touch-sensitive...

Some general tips for designing for web in...
I started this post as an email to a designer friend that’s about to start on a design for a site that I’ll be coding (hopefully soon). She’s a savvy enough designer for print, but there are a few things to take into consideration when designing for web. A lot of these tips can be applied to print design, too. Some of you may read these and think “well, duh!” but I...

Stuffit 14 released today. Who cares?
If you’re still using Stuffit, I have to ask… Why? Mac OS X has a fast and reliable built-in compression utility that makes zip files for emailing or sending/uploading via FTP. I stopped using Stuffit in any kind of meaningful way years ago when Mac OS X added file compression and decompression as a system-level function (with Tiger, I believe). I still needed Stuffit Expander for...

Is MMS really necessary for iPhone users?
Really, is it? I guess maybe if you want to send images or video to non-iPhone, non-smartphone users, or smartphone users that don’t get email on their phone, then maybe you need to use MMS to send “rich media” messages. But why can’t you just use email? And if you need it pushed to you RIGHT AWAY, sign up for a TOTALLY FREE Yahoo! email account, and if you don’t...

Say no to Exchange!
Kerio MailServer 6.7.2 released today. http://bit.ly/StQYd Support for latest OSes and bug fixes. If you’re not REQUIRED to run a Microsoft Exchange server in your organization, then DON’T! It’s expensive, it eats hardware resources like there’s no tomorrow, and you need a high-dollar “certified” Microsoft “professional” to run it. Kerio MailServer...

Is there still a need for Spanning Sync http://bit.ly/jGUp now that you can sync your contacts and calendars natively on Mac OS X (and your iPhone too)? I’m asking ‘cause I honestly don’t know. And if it’s really not necessary, maybe they need to lower the price ($65 one-time or $25/year seems a little high for what this app does). Anyone have any experience with this?

If you listen to internet radio on your Mac, check out Radium http://bit.ly/D7Bp1. It’s a menu bar app that gives you access to tons of streaming stations. It’s free to download and try (for 42 minutes at a time), and you set your own price to unlock it for unlimited use. Sounds like a sweet deal to me. You’ll just have to decide if you can spare the space in your menu bar.

If you work in a large company with an IT department that insists on sticking with ancient technology like IE6 (mainly due to inertia and laziness rather than any real “technical” reason since IE7 should still support your company’s proprietary internal .NET web apps), then maybe you could at least get around the horrible crippling limitations of “the browser that broke the...

Carbon Copy Cloner, the awesome (and easy) Mac disk cloning app has been updated to 3.3. Mike Bombich doesn’t have to give his software away and hope that people give him donations for his work, but this is a great app...

Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac released today
Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac is released today. Does anybody really care? I guess if you’re a quasi-advanced home user that’s grown out of iPhoto (or Picasa, which was just updated yesterday) and you want to do some basic compositing and retouching, and don’t need to work in CMYK mode, then it’s great, right?
